This is a copy of the 1327 Lay Subsidy (the subsidy was imposed on persons according to the value of their estate) for Essendine in Rutland. This document shows the “estate” of Thomas Lock was taxed at 12d.
This document is the earliest known mention of the Lock name that could be attributed to the Lock’s of Ryhall, in Rutland.
If you use this as a starting point, i.e. Essendine, it’s possible to track the Lock’s to Gretford, Careby, Dyke, Thurlby, Langtoft and finally Ryhall with places in between, the hard part now comes trying to link the Lock’s together and join up the dots as it were………
We found this 1327 Lay Subsidy on the Essendine Parish Council website, under their history section and grateful thanks and acknowledgment are given to the parish clerk for allowing us permission to use the information here.
