Alexander Lock’s exact birth date is hard to confirm, as early records rarely list births. Records from Langtoft, Lincolnshire show he was baptized on March 13, 1679. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Lock. They married on November 14, 1678. Some sources cite 1675 as his birth year. Yet, at that time, John Lock was married to Alice Torye. This makes the 1675 birth year unlikely. The evidence supports that Alexander was the child of John and Elizabeth (nee Baines).

A deed to sell cattle, initially found by Charles Locke back in 1937, includes an extract from the deed which I’ve included below:

‘Alexander Lock, carpenter of Ryhall in the County of Rutland, held a continuance of lease dated 7 January in the Six and Thirtieth year of the reign of the Sovereign Lord Charles the Second of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. Defender of the Faith, in the year One thousand six hundred and eighty-four, giving right to sell cattle in the street in Stamford, Lincolnshire.’
