This document is a detailed family tree titled “1675 THE LOCKE FAMILY TREE 1936”, tracing the Lock/Locke lineage across more than 250 years. It begins with an extract from a 1684 deed dating to the reign of King Charles II, identifying the earliest known ancestor, Alexander Lock, as a carpenter in Rhyall, Rutland, with trading rights in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
The chart follows the development of the family name from “Lock” to “Locke” and records significant movements over time, including migrations to Australia and the United States in the late nineteenth century. It was compiled around 1936 by Charles James Locke, drawing on parish registers from Ryhall Church and various historical deeds.
Multiple versions of this tree have circulated, each containing additions from different members of the Locke family. For this project, I have aimed to recreate the original document as faithfully as possible, preserving its original spellings and errors — such as “Rhyall” instead of “Ryhall.”
Principal Individuals:
- Alexander Lock: Root ancestor. Born 1675, died 1743. Occupation: Carpenter. Residence: Rhyall, County of Rutland. He held a lease dated January 4, 1684, giving him the right to sell cattle in the street in Stamford, Lincolnshire. He married three times: Mary Francis (June 13, 1703), Annie Twilly (March 25, 1706), and Ann Glinn (July 24, 1728).
- Herbert John Locke: Born 1865. Married Annie Rachell White. The document notes he migrated to Australia in 1887.
- Mary Ann Locke: Born 1848, died 1911. Married John Poole (1839-1898). The document notes she migrated to Nebraska, U.S.A., in 1870.
- William Burton Locke: Born 1831, died in London in 1893. He is noted in the generation where the family name officially changed from “Lock” to “Locke”.
- Susan Locke: Born 1841, died 1926. Notably, three of her daughters (Susan, Mary Ann, and Jane) are all listed as having married a “Wm. Sullivan”.
Associated Individuals:
- Richard Burton & Mary Pollard: Listed in a separate small tree on the far right. Richard was born in 1687, Mary in 1684. They are the ancestors of a William Burton (1781-1830), whose surname was likely adopted as a middle name by later Locke descendants (e.g., William Burton Locke, b. 1831).
