[Marginalia left side, written vertically]: The premium of twenty pounds £20 to be paid in consideration of this apprenticeship. viz – £10 on the signing of this indenture the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. And £10 on the 20th day of September 1882.
This Indenture made the Twentieth day of September one thousand eight hundred and eighty Witnesseth That Charles James Locke of No 1 Merrow Cottages, Avondale Road, Peckham in the County of Surrey Son of Mr John Locke of No 1 Merrow Cottages Avondale Road, Peckham, Father by and with the consent and approbation of his Father testified by his executing these Presents, doth put himself Apprentice to Mr George Lupson of Alpine Villas, Bellenden Road, Peckham, Builder in the County of Surrey to learn the Art, Trade, or Business of Carpenter and with him, after the manner of an Apprentice to serve from the 20th day of September 1880 until the full end and term of four years from thence next following, fully to be complete and ended. During which term the said Apprentice his Master faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, and his lawful commands obey;—he shall do no damage to his said Master or his Goods, nor suffer it to be done by others, but shall forthwith give notice to his said Master of the same, when necessary;—he shall not waste the Goods of his said Master, nor lend them unlawfully to any; nor shall he do any act whereby his said Master may sustain any loss, with his own Goods or others’ during the said term;—without Licence of his said Master, he shall neither buy nor sell during his Apprenticeship; nor shall he absent himself from his said Master’s service day or night unlawfully; but in all things as a faithful Apprentice shall behave himself towards his said Master and others, during the said term. And the said George Lupson his said Apprentice in the Art, Trade, or Business of Carpenter which he useth by the best means in his power shall teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed;—the said Charles James Locke and will pay the said Apprentice the Wages following—that is to say 1st year six shillings per week 6/- 2nd year nine shillings per week 9/- 3rd year twelve shillings per week 12/- 4th year sixteen shillings per week 16/- These presents shall be handed over to the said Charles James Locke on the completion of the said term, with a Certificate of such service endorsed thereon. AND for the true performance of all and every of the said Covenants and Agreements the said Parties bind themselves by these Presents. IN WITNESS whereof the said parties have hereunto set their Hands and Seals the day and year first above written.
