Death of Herbert John Locke

Death of Mr. H. J. Locke MAYOR OF EAST FREMANTLE Perth, Aug. 23.—

Mr. H. J. Locke, Mayor of East Fremantle, died at his residence this morning after a short illness at the age of 79. Mr. Locke had been associated with various philanthropic activities and was keenly interested in civic affairs. Born in London, he left for Melbourne at the age of 23 years and came to Western Australia in 1891, joining his brother, Mr. C. J. Locke two years later in establishing the furniture business of Messrs. C. and H. Locke. After 25 years of partnership he left the firm owing to a partial breakdown in health. He made a world tour with his family and on his return to this State devoted his time to a building programme at East Fremantle and later established two cinema theatres in the district. In 1918 he joined the East Fremantle Municipal Council and was mayor from 1924 to 1931 and again from 1934 up to the time of his death. He had also been chairman of the Melville Road Board for a short period and other offices filled by him were that of chairman of the Fremantle Hospital Board, chairman of the Fremantle Cemetery Board, member of the Fremantle Tramways Board, member of the Town Planning Commission, member of the Fremantle Methodist Trust and treasurer of the Methodist Home for Children at Victoria Park. He leaves a widow, one son and two daughters. After a private service at his late residence the funeral will leave for the Fremantle Cemetery at 3.15 to-morrow afternoon.
