The Late Mrs. C. C. Locke.

A well-known and highly-respected member of the community in the person of the late Mrs. Clare Caroline Locke, wife of Mr. Charles J. Locke, of Messrs. C. and H. Locke, died at her residence, “Brockley,” 34 Lake-street, Peppermint Grove, on Friday last. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, when the cortege moved from her late residence to the Wesley Church, Fremantle, where a service was conducted by the Rev. Eric H. O. Nye, assisted by the Rev. C. A. Jenkins of the Central Wesley Church, Perth. Mr. Nye, in the course of an address in the church, where a very large congregation was present, paid tribute to the exemplary life of the deceased. She was one whose characteristic was service, he said, a devoted wife and mother and a very staunch supporter of the Methodist Church in all its activities. Ever since her arrival in Western Australia 38 years ago she had not only been a regular attendant at the church services, but had been in active office in the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour, the Ladies’ Guilds and the Wesley Girls’ Club, and had been a teacher in the Sunday schools practically throughout the period. Mrs. Locke also actively associated herself with the Soldiers’ Welcome Committee during the war period and spent a great deal of time entertaining and caring for the troops passing through Fremantle on their way to or returning from the front. On behalf of those present he extended sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives on the loss of one who was indeed a Christian and whose passing was a severe loss to the community. Mr. H. Griffiths officiated at the organ and as the coffin was borne from the church played Chopin’s “Marche Funebre.” The remains were interred in the Methodist portion of the Fremantle Cemetery. Mr. Nye also officiated at the graveside, where he was assisted by the Revs. C. A. Jenkins, C. E. Butler and A. G. Howse.

Rewell and W. Stephen (cousins). The pall bearers were the Mayor of Fremantle (Mr. F. E. Gibson), the chairman of the Peppermint Grove Road Board (Mr. J. M. Hill), the president of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce (Mr. C. L. Messner), Messrs. James Proud and W. W. Williams (trustees, Wesley Church), A. E. Colebrook (Messrs. C. and H. Locke), H. E. Crawford (Locke Furniture Manufacturing Co.), R. E. Jarman (Methodist Mission), L. A. Hancock and W. M. Gray. The cortege was preceded from the cemetery gates to the graveside by members of the Methodist Church Ladies’ Guilds comprising Mesdames A. T. Mott, J. Proud, A. W. Oates, T. Hines, Haeley, P.
